German prosecutors in Hamburg arrested an 18-year-old man on Thursday, citing evidence that he drove a 14-year-old girl in the United States to take her own life. The suspect faces charges of indirect murder and grievous bodily harm. Officials confirmed the arrest on Friday, noting it followed a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The case began in September, when the suspect, then 17, connected with the Indiana teenager through Discord. Prosecutors described the girl as psychologically fragile. During the following weeks, the man allegedly pressured her to cut herself and write the letters NMK on a wall using her own blood. He requested video recordings of these acts. The group, known as the Nefarious Maniac Kult, is part of a larger network called COM.

A few days after the self-harm incidents, the girl hanged herself in her bedroom. Prosecutors state the suspect sought a video of her death. He allegedly believed the footage would increase his standing within the online group or help him gain full entry.

FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O'Malley stated his office worked with the Fort Wayne Police Department to share information that advanced the arrest. The Fort Wayne Homicide Unit identified the suspect as a contributor to the juvenile's death. O'Malley said, "Anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand this: There is no safe haven from justice." He added that the FBI works with global partners to hold such suspects accountable.

The incident aligns with a reported spike in nihilistic violent extremism. FBI Director Kash Patel announced in September that the bureau saw a 300% increase in such cases from September 2024 to September 2025. Many of these cases involve the group 764. Members of 764 lack a specific ideology but encourage self-harm and violence. They often urge victims to produce videos documenting self-harm or child sexual abuse material.

The suspect remains in custody in Hamburg. The next step in the legal process involves formal proceedings before the Hamburg court system to address the cross-border nature of the crime.
