4,000 people have died across Africa since May as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to claim lives. Kenya, which is currently managing its first recorded outbreak of the disease, confirmed a second death on October 24. The patient, a 65-year-old woman, had been placed in quarantine after close contact with the first victim. She developed symptoms on October 13 and subsequently passed away. The first victim was a man who traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo, fell ill in September, and died in Nairobi a few days after arriving for treatment.

Seven other individuals are currently receiving care at two isolation facilities. The group includes three other relatives of the initial patient, three health workers, and a hospital cleaner. The health ministry stated that all cases belong to a single cluster. Officials reported no evidence of community spread outside this group. The ministry emphasized the localized nature of the infections while monitoring the situation closely.

The virus strain identified is the Bundibugyo species, a relatively rare variant. No approved vaccine or treatment exists for this specific strain, though clinical trials are underway. The disease spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids, including blood and vomit. As the infection progresses, patients may experience vomiting, diarrhea, and organ failure. Some individuals develop internal and external bleeding, a symptom that does not appear in all cases.

Prof Ali Pate, Nigeria's health minister, noted a possible genetic link between the Kenyan outbreak and a confirmed case in Nigeria. He stated there is no evidence the Kenyan patient traveled to Nigeria. Both initial patients are believed to have transited through Uganda's Entebbe airport earlier this month. Officials are examining whether the two first patients crossed paths during that travel. Nigeria is conducting further testing to clarify the connection.

Kenya has implemented enhanced screening for travelers arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo and nine other high-risk countries. The list includes Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Angola, Zambia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Passengers must complete a digital surveillance form before boarding. Upon arrival, they must present a QR code to port health officials. Aircraft arriving from these nations undergo extra public health screening. The government is running public awareness campaigns to encourage prompt reporting of suspected cases.

The United States has advised its citizens to avoid travel to Kenya. Neighboring countries Uganda, Ethiopia, and Somalia have placed their health systems on alert. Uganda's health ministry announced on Friday that travelers who have recently visited the Democratic Republic of Congo will no longer be permitted to transit through the country. This measure is part of the nation's broader prevention strategy.

The International Rescue Committee is working with both governments to limit the spread. The organization noted that Kenya faces a steady risk of new cases crossing its borders. The ongoing coordination aims to contain the disease before it spreads beyond the current cluster of infections.
