One gunshot rang out at The Range LA on Saturday, sending a four-time Oscar-nominated director to a local hospital in stable condition. Michael Mann was treated for a superficial injury after a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the facility at approximately 4 p.m. following a call reporting shots fired. Their investigation determined the shooting was accidental. Authorities stated that the subject was transported to a nearby medical center in stable condition.
A representative for Mann provided a statement confirming the details. "On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released," the rep said.
Sources familiar with the event told TMZ that Mann was attempting to holster his firearm during target practice when it fired. He has been an experienced target shooter for decades. The incident occurred at a sanctioned range in Los Angeles.
Mann is currently in pre-production for Heat 2. The project reunites him with Leonardo DiCaprio, Stephen Graham, and Christian Bale. The film marks a return to the franchise more than three decades after the 1995 original, which starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, and Jon Voight.
His career includes directing Thief, The Insider, Ali, Collateral, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, and Ferrari. He has received four Academy Award nominations, including best director, best picture, and best adapted screenplay for The Insider, and best picture for The Aviator.
