The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating the sudden death of a British woman who drowned while attempting to rescue her children in the Bahamas.
The incident occurred on Tuesday near the southern tip of Bimini, where the woman, her husband, and their two sons were snorkeling. A strong current swept the boys away, and the 36-year-old mother was pulled from the group as she tried to reach them.
Police stated that the boys were eventually rescued from the water. The mother was also pulled from the sea and brought to the North Bimini Ferry Dock, where bystanders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10:00 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the dock. They traveled to the scene and found that medics had already transported her to a local clinic.
A local doctor pronounced the woman dead at the clinic despite resuscitation efforts. Authorities believe she is from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.
The police force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family. The department noted that its thoughts are with the family of the deceased.
