Collin Sexton finished with a plus-23 rating in a 103-87 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night at the Intuit Dome. The Lakers forced 24 turnovers and held their crosstown rivals to 35.1% shooting from the field. Sexton scored 21 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including four of seven three-point attempts.
The win marks the Lakers' fourth victory in five games this season. The team improved to a 4-1 record with the result. Sexton has started the season as a key member of the bench unit, a role that has drawn consistent attention from media outlets. His on-court demeanor contrasts sharply with his off-court personality. Lakers coach JJ Redick described Sexton's intensity as a "level of insanity" after a road win against the Utah Jazz on Sunday.
Sexton returned to the lineup on Wednesday after sitting out the first regular-season game and all preseason contests with a calf muscle strain in his left leg. He also missed the second game of a back-to-back set against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday. In that loss, he missed all five of his three-point attempts. Redick stated that he trusts Sexton's catch-and-shoot abilities because the guard is a career 40% shooter from deep.
The defensive pressure began early in the contest. Sexton sparked a pair of steals and layups by Quentin Grimes in the first quarter. Grimes finished with 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting. The Lakers built a 56-38 halftime lead after a 23-4 run during the second quarter. Redick noted that the defensive stretch was emblematic of the team's performance for the entire night.
Guard Quentin Grimes said Sexton arrives at full speed every time he enters the game. Grimes stated that Sexton is likely on "go" when he wakes up. The forward and center Sandro Mamukelashvili and forward Jarred Vanderbilt also recorded plus-minus ratings above 20 in the win. The Lakers defeated the Clippers for the second time in less than a week.
Star guard Luka Doncic and forward Ziaire Williams sat out due to back tightness and left foot inflammation, respectively. Sexton's performance provided a boost to the bench unit during his absence. Sexton said he transforms into a different person when he steps between the lines. He described the experience as war time, a sentiment he reiterated after the game in Salt Lake City earlier in the week.
Sexton signed a two-year contract with the Lakers during free agency this summer. He is 27 years old. The next game in the busy schedule is scheduled for Thursday night. The team will continue to evaluate Sexton's return from injury on a day-by-day basis.
