The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that a six-day ceasefire will take effect in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The truce begins on Thursday, Oct. 29. The stated goal is to allow humanitarian aid to enter and to prepare a civilian evacuation route. This localized halt in military action is unusual for a first lady's office to announce directly.

The arrangement follows a series of diplomatic moves. Last week, Pope Leo spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the dire conditions in the city. Mrs. Trump has also been working to reunite 34 children with their families after their forced removal. These actions occurred while President Trump's wider efforts to end the war have stalled. He recently told reporters that Russia has been behaving well, stating that they have not been doing much.

Mrs. Trump's office credits her with brokering the deal. They said she worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms. She acted in the formal role of Exclusive Intermediary. The office stated that she started the talks and aligned the parties on objectives, technical procedures, timing, and processes. Neither Russia nor Ukraine has publicly commented on the announcement yet. Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement was reached for the occupied territory.

In a statement, Mrs. Trump described Oleshky as a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. She noted that the remaining population is mostly elderly residents who need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water. She said residents have limited electricity and live amid mined roads. She claimed that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.

Under the plan, non-military civilian leaders from both countries will visit residents in their homes to assess needs. Those who wish to leave will receive coordinated support and transportation. Mrs. Trump said she anticipates some residents will go to Russia and others to Ukraine. She has arranged for Newsmax, a conservative outlet, to document the work of both teams.

White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news. Writing on X, he said it was a major, positive step towards peace. He added that history will remember her tireless work to help those in need. The pause is set to begin on Oct. 29, with the aim of securing a designated safe passageway for civilians.

The ceasefire is scheduled to last for six days. It covers the specific city of Oleshky. The plan includes a joint visit by civilian leaders from both nations. Mrs. Trump's office says she aligned the parties on all technical and procedural aspects of the evacuation and aid delivery.
