A humanitarian operation to open access to Oleshky is scheduled for 29 October. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, confirmed the date. The mission will proceed under a ceasefire that begins on the night of 27 October.
The pause in fighting applies to a designated area in Kherson Oblast. The general staffs of both Ukraine and Russia announced the agreement on Friday evening. The truce is intended to restore access to the town, deliver food and medicine, and allow residents to leave the combat zone.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces have mined the roads in the temporarily occupied part of the region. He described the conditions in a video address as dire and extremely dire. Zelenskyy said an arrangement concerning the town should be put into effect soon.
The President indicated that talks have continued at various levels for some time. He noted that Ukraine will do its part and that the country counts on American mediation to work. The White House issued a statement saying US First Lady Melania Trump secured the truce. The statement described a humanitarian disaster as currently unfolding in the area.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia agreed to the ceasefire. He said the pause would allow the humanitarian mission to proceed. Lubinets noted that the operation will take place while the ceasefire is in force.
