Four people were in hospital after gunfire erupted outside a Loganholme venue on Saturday evening, just as a community boxing card was getting under way. Queensland police said officers were called to the licensed premises at 8.15pm to reports that shots had been fired from a vehicle, which was seen leaving the area.
The venue, Fitzys Loganholme on Bryants Road, had been booked to stage the Logan City Titles Fight Night. Deputy commander Chris Stream told the Today show that a number of people had suffered gunshot wounds and described the scene as "confronting".
Police said the four injured people were taken to hospital for assessment of their conditions. The offenders remain at large. Investigators said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public, and they have asked anyone with information to contact them.
Logan mayor Jon Raven told the program residents in the area were frightened. "This has sent a shockwave through Logan. We've never seen something like this in Logan before," he said. Raven said he had attended similar nights previously and found them family-friendly, with many children present, adding: "This will impact them for the rest of their lives."
Raven said the evening had been organised to steer children away from violence. He said the organiser uses boxing to empower and reconnect young people who might be going off the rails, and that "this is the opposite of what he'll want to see."
Logan City Titles posted a statement on social media on Sunday morning: "We are heartbroken about the incident that occurred at the fight night." The organisers called the card a community event showcasing local talent, and added: "These types of incidents have no place in the boxing community or any part of the broader community."
Police said the vehicle involved was seen leaving the scene. Anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to contact investigators.
