Security forces are being mobilized across Italy in preparation for a new round of protests scheduled for Saturday. The demonstrations target Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing administration and the escalating cost of living. This latest mobilization follows a turbulent week in which a protest in Milan turned into a confrontation between police and demonstrators, accompanied by significant looting.

The organizing effort is led by the October 17 Movement, a recently formed collective. The group has allied with student federations, grassroots trade unions, and antiwar coalitions to drive the current wave of dissent. The movement has expressed deep skepticism toward the leadership, describing the government as authoritarian. In a statement on Instagram, the group argued that those denying the future of young people are inherently violent.

In response to the unrest last weekend, the government has implemented a series of strict security measures. These include the deployment of 500 soldiers to Milan, the country's financial center. Police conducted raids and searches in multiple cities on Friday to identify suspects involved in the previous riots. Adnkronos reported that officers carried out an additional 150 raids on Saturday morning in the northern region of Lombardy.

Organizers have kept the specific locations of the new demonstrations secret until the last minute to maintain an element of surprise. Three meeting points are expected to be revealed on social media on Saturday afternoon. The movement has emphasized its desire for a peaceful turnout. One participant identified as E stated that the crowd must remain calm to avoid giving police a reason to charge. Another member, identified as Q, noted that there is no real distinction between violent and peaceful protesters, asserting that the group is united as one.

Police have located and begun questioning the administrator of the movement's Instagram page. According to the daily Corriere della Sera, the individual is a 30-year-old Italian-Moroccan freelance journalist and researcher. He is currently under investigation on suspicion of inciting crimes. Meanwhile, the public prosecutor has blamed social media for misleading young people into what he described as insurrectional acts.

The majority of those detained during last Sunday's unrest were very young. Of the 271 people taken into custody, 220 were under the age of 18. Reports indicate that some participants joined after being unexpectedly added to a Telegram group. One young detainee said the organizers promised chaos and the opportunity to take many goods. Lawyer Michele D'Agostino, who is defending two demonstrators aged 21 and 15, noted that the teenager did not fully understand the protest's purpose. He had seen it on TikTok and decided to attend with a friend.

Justice Minister Carlo Nordio told Sky TG24 that the country needs to expand the capacity of its youth detention facilities. This remark came in response to the mass arrests of minors. Separately, truck drivers in southern Italy set up roadblocks earlier in the week to protest soaring fuel prices. These blockades left many markets without supplies for several days. On Thursday, the government attempted to ease the pressure by granting tax breaks and creating a special fund for farmers and fishermen.
