The music industry's recent friction over political expression came to a head this week in Dublin, where a major benefit concert series began with a full house. This event represents a direct response to the removal of an opening act from a massive pop tour, turning a scheduling dispute into a coordinated fundraising effort.

Macklemore performed Monday night at Dublin's 3Arena, kicking off a three-show series that has already sold out all venues. The lineup included Hozier, the Irish group Kneecap, Palestinian-American DJ Habibeats, singer Lina Makoul, and rapper M1 of Dead Prez. The backing band Boega also performed, having previously dropped out of Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour in solidarity with Macklemore.

The decision to remove Macklemore from Sheeran's support roster happened last month. Messina Touring Group, Sheeran's promoter, cited venue concerns as the primary reason. Venues hosting upcoming U.S. dates stated they would not allow a concert to proceed with Macklemore on the bill. The promoter warned that retaining the rapper would result in tour cancellations, impacting hundreds of thousands of fans.

Following the split, Sheeran addressed the situation onstage during his solo shows. He stated that he did not want to disappoint fans or become an activist musician, noting that the controversy placed him in the middle of a passionate argument about free speech. Sheeran emphasized that his concerts are a safe space for everyone and expressed deep worry about venues pre-approving performance content in the free world.

The Dublin show featured special guest speakers, including Irish actor Liam Cunningham, activist Nadia Greenspan, and organizer Samir Eskanda. Cunningham spoke onstage about the balance between celebration and memory. He told the audience that enjoying the night does not mean forgetting the suffering in Gaza. Instead, he said, it means celebrating the humanity and life that Palestinians have fought to protect.

Organizers kept the lineup secret until the show, and all proceeds will go to organizations supporting Palestine and the Palestinian movement. A press release described these groups as providing essential medical supplies, food, and humanitarian assistance. It also noted that the organizations work on education, community support, advocacy, and policy change in countries described as complicit in the ongoing conflict.

The tour continues with a performance at Paris' Accor Arena on Oct. 29. The series concludes at London's OVO Arena Wembley on Oct. 30. Both remaining shows are already sold out, extending the momentum from the Dublin opening night to two other major European cities.

Macklemore announced the tour on Instagram, reflecting on the last few weeks as a period of collective awakening around Palestinian liberation. He wrote that being apolitical during a genocide no longer works in 2026. He noted that audiences are now asking artists to show up, educate themselves, and use the stage for more than just entertainment when the call for a free Palestine is met with silence.
