Former U.S. President Barack Obama ridiculed the administration's tariff policy on Saturday, specifically targeting the decision to engage in a trade dispute with Canada. Speaking at a rally in Cleveland, Ohio, to support Democratic candidates, Obama mocked the narrative surrounding the conflict with the United States' northern neighbor.

Obama jokingly characterized Canada as a 'well-known evil empire,' a sarcastic remark aimed at the administration's justification for tariffs against the ally. He highlighted Canada's cultural contributions to the United States, stating, 'These are the people who gave us maple syrup and Martin Short.' He further described Canadians as 'the nicest people' and 'our friendly neighbours to the north,' questioning the rationale behind picking a fight with them.

The former president also addressed the broader economic impact of the tariff strategy. He noted that the trade conflict has resulted in the negative effects many analysts predicted, with American consumers bearing the brunt of increased costs. These rising expenses have reportedly affected Republican prospects in the upcoming midterms, particularly within states along the border.

Despite this pressure, Canadian officials do not anticipate a resolution before the voting begins. Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated on CBC's Power & Politics that Ottawa does not expect a deal before the Nov. 3 vote. This statement follows an announcement made on Friday by the current administration regarding plans to lift tariffs on certain Canadian products.

The trade relationship between the two nations has been marked by retaliatory measures since the levy campaign began last year. The administration stated these tariffs were intended to address alleged fentanyl trafficking and trade imbalances. However, trade talks between the two sides broke down in August.

The current administration has frequently targeted Canada in its own campaign events. At a rally in Highland Heights, Ky., on Oct. 17, the President addressed the dispute directly. He stated, 'At some point, we're making a deal that's gonna be amazing,' while adding that for years the U.S. has lost 'billions and billions of dollars.'

The President also commented on Canadian leadership during his remarks in Kentucky. He called former prime minister Justin Trudeau a 'loser,' a comment that drew cheers from the crowd. He then referenced Trudeau's successor, Mark Carney, stating, 'Your current guy's good … he's a nice guy, but he's not nice when it comes to trade.' He added, 'They're learning and they're suffering.'

Obama is campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. With the vote scheduled for Nov. 3, discussions regarding tariff policy and international trade relations remain active topics on the campaign trail.
