Rocket Lab deployed three commercial signals-intelligence satellites into low Earth orbit on October 23. The spacecraft, built for Virginia-based HawkEye 360, will operate at an altitude of 520 kilometers to monitor radio frequency emissions.
The Electron rocket lifted off from New Zealand at 3:11 a.m. EDT. This launch marked the company's 98th mission and its 19th flight of 2026. Rocket Lab named the mission "We're Not Hawking Around" in reference to the customer's satellite designation.
HawkEye 360 operates its satellites in clusters of three. The systems collect data across the RF spectrum for maritime tracking, radar monitoring, and communications mapping. The company states that its proprietary signal processing and AI-powered analytics convert spectrum knowledge into a strategic advantage for the U.S. government and its allies.
This deployment follows a previous HawkEye 360 launch that occurred just two days earlier via a SpaceX rideshare mission. Since entering orbit in 2018, the company has placed nearly 50 satellites in low Earth orbit. These assets enable faster decision-making for intelligence partners by providing continuous space-based collection capabilities.
Rocket Lab's 2026 flight record includes 16 missions using the 59-foot-tall Electron rocket. The remaining three flights utilized HASTE, a suborbital variant designed for hypersonic technology testing. The Electron rocket continues to serve as the primary vehicle for these commercial orbital insertions.
The three new satellites must complete commissioning procedures before beginning their scanning duties. Once operational, they will join the existing fleet to enhance coverage of global radio frequency activity. This expansion continues the rapid deployment pace observed for this specific customer.
