Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has proposed a specific tactic for handling a potential Viktor Orbán appointment to the United Nations.
Sybiha posted on X, as reported by European Pravda, that he is confident Orbán would utilize his long practice of vetoing and blackmailing if he secures the role. The minister noted that Orbán developed these skills over years of blocking major European Union decisions.
The proposal centers on a tactic used during an EU summit in late 2023. At that meeting, Orbán left the room, which allowed other leaders to approve accession negotiations with Ukraine without a Hungarian veto. Sybiha described this as a key moment where the group took the former prime minister out for coffee.
The foreign minister wrote that Ukraine could share this experience with the rest of the world if the need arises. He framed the coffee break as a practical solution to managing Orbán’s influence within the new role.
Reports in The Wall Street Journal indicate that the US administration is promoting Orbán for the UN secretary-general post. The administration reportedly expects support from China and Russia for the move.
In May, investigative journalists detailed a scenario where MAGA wing figures in the US Republican Party would appoint Orbán to a UN position to shield him from prosecution in Hungary. Hungarian investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi added that Orbán is preparing to move to the US if legal action begins in his home country.
