The cast of Star Trek: The Original Series has lost another member. Walter Koenig, the actor who played Ensign Pavel Chekov, died on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood.

A representative for the actor confirmed the news, citing natural causes as the reason for his death. He was 90 years old.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk for the entire three-season run of the original series between 1966 and 1969, paid tribute to his colleague on Tuesday. Shatner posted on X that he was deeply saddened by the news of Koenig's passing.

Koenig joined the production in 1967 for the second season. The two leads later appeared together in six Star Trek films. Shatner noted that while they were not close friends off camera, they shared a long professional history across those productions.

In his message, Shatner focused on how Koenig interacted with audiences. He recalled that at conventions, Koenig rarely stayed behind a signing table. Instead, he chose to mingle with the fans who had supported the franchise for decades. Shatner called that genuine connection rare and said it would be remembered by everyone who met him.

George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu across all three original seasons, also offered words of remembrance on Facebook on Monday. Takei emphasized that Koenig's identity extended beyond his television role.

Takei described Koenig as a writer, a teacher, and a thoughtful man. He thanked the fans for their years of affection, noting that Koenig loved them in return. Takei closed with the words, "Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course."

Koenig's death brings attention to the legacy of the original ensemble, which continues to attract large audiences at conventions and through new media releases. The actor's family has not yet announced plans for a public memorial or funeral service.
