The Indianapolis Colts moved two of their most valuable assets on Tuesday, trading offensive guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers. The transactions mark a decisive shift in strategy for the Colts, who are now openly prioritizing future capital over immediate competitive potential.
Nelson, a six-time All-Pro, signed with Seattle in exchange for a third-round pick in 2027 and a fifth-round pick in 2028. The move provides the Seahawks with immediate depth on the offensive line for a modest cost. Buckner, a two-time All-Pro, returns to the 49ers, the team that originally drafted him. In return, Indianapolis secured a fourth-round pick for 2027. This selection holds more value than the projected compensatory fifth-round pick the Colts would have received had Buckner departed via free agency.
The trades signal that the Colts view the current season as effectively concluded. By converting high-salaries, high-performance players into late-round assets, the franchise resets its roster for future contention. The team retains quarterback Anthony Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor, though the source notes that Taylor could be the next star dealt before the deadline.
In other major sports markets, the Tampa Bay Rays avoided elimination against the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series. Ben Williamson hit a walk-off single in the 12th inning to break a 3-3 tie, forcing a Game 5. The series is scheduled for a quick turnaround, with the next game set for 8 p.m. ET. In the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves ruled out Anthony Edwards for up to two months following arthroscopic knee surgery. Edwards recorded 47 points in his final game before the injury. The Utah Jazz will also miss Jaren Jackson Jr. for at least six weeks due to a torn MCL.
The NFL trade deadline remains open, with the Colts' moves setting a precedent for other teams. The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers both improved their rosters without surrendering high-value draft capital. The Colts' accumulation of 2027 and 2028 picks provides flexibility for future roster construction.
The next scheduled event for the Colts is their Week 9 game, while the Rays prepare for Game 5 of the World Series. The NFL's trade deadline will close at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, leaving the market open for additional transactions involving remaining assets.
