Twenty-five U.S. House representatives sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday night, pressing for an explanation of how Flávio Bolsonaro obtained a U.S. visa and entered the country. The lawmakers are investigating whether the Trump administration facilitated the Brazilian politician's exit from his home nation while he faces active criminal inquiries.

The initiative is led by Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove of California and Representative Dina Titus of Nevada, alongside other members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The group seeks to determine if the State Department coordinated the travel authorization with other federal agencies and whether officials were aware of the open investigations against Bolsonaro before granting permission to leave.

The letter states that the American public and Congress have a legitimate interest in knowing if diplomatic and immigration resources were used to assist a foreign political figure under these specific conditions. The legislators argue the case warrants transparency because it involves a foreign judicial process and may impact bilateral relations and U.S. migration policy.

Bolsonaro, a member of a prominent Brazilian right-wing family and close to figures in Trump's orbit, is under investigation in Brazil for alleged money laundering. Following his defeat in the presidential runoff against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a Brazilian judge ordered him to surrender his passport and remain in the country. Reports indicate he subsequently left with his wife and children, traveling first to Argentina and then to Miami.

Politico, which cited these reports, noted that it has not independently verified the details of his travel route. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Bolsonaro and his family arrived in southern Florida. Customs and Border Protection officers inspected the group according to standard immigration procedures and released them after the review.

The State Department has not yet responded to the specific questions raised by the legislators. The White House directed inquiries to the State Department and Customs and Border Protection. The congressional inquiry aims to clarify if the current administration played a role beyond standard entry protocols in bringing Bolsonaro to the United States.
