The National Football League has confirmed that Jay-Z will headline the halftime show for the 2027 Super Bowl. The performance is scheduled for February 2027 at SoFi Stadium. This marks the first time a rapper has headlined the event through a direct booking rather than a standard invitation.
Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, signed a contract with the NFL in 2019 to manage the halftime lineup. That agreement reportedly includes a $25 million fee for this specific gig. Roc Nation has curated the talent for the show for seven years, consistently featuring hip-hop artists in prominent roles.
The announcement arrives amid a public rebranding effort by the artist. In March, he told GQ’s Frazier Tharpe that 2026 would be a year of offense. He resumed using the umlauts in his name and removed the locs he had grown to honor his daughter and a late uncle. He also sold out three consecutive nights at Yankee Stadium.
This period follows the dismissal of a civil lawsuit that named Jay-Z and Sean Combs as co-defendants in a recanted rape allegation. An appellate court recently dismissed Jay-Z’s subsequent defamation suit against the filing attorney, Tony Buzbee. Combs was sentenced to more than four years in prison on prostitution-related charges.
Critics have debated whether the Super Bowl role represents artistic triumph or corporate alignment. Former journalist Elizabeth Méndez Berry noted that Jay-Z has long responded to public critiques, such as when he addressed her observations about his fashion choices. He also responded to Harry Belafonte’s 2012 criticism of Black celebrity social responsibility by stating, “My presence is charity.”
New criticism emerged from the eight-episode HBO documentary “Jay-Z in 8.” In the final episode, Jay-Z describes “house Negroes” as extortionists who demand money for support. Former hip-hop journalist Touré recently argued that Jay-Z often serves this function for white power structures. Video essayist F.D Signifier placed Jay-Z in a “Black misleadership class.”
Jay-Z’s influence extends beyond music into business ventures. He played a role in the Nets’ deal with developer Bruce Ratner, which led to the construction of Barclays Center. Jay-Z holds a 0.067 percent ownership stake in the venture. The project is credited with gentrifying parts of Brooklyn, displacing some longtime residents.
