Dale Brown died Friday, Oct. 23, at the age of 90. His death occurred 48 hours after Louisiana State University announced his selection for the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. Brown spent 25 seasons as the Tigers head coach from 1972 to 1997, amassing 448 victories, the most in school history.
During his tenure, Brown guided the program to four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles. The team qualified for the NCAA Tournament 13 times under his leadership. LSU reached the Final Four stage in 1981 and 1986. Brown received the Associated Press National Coach of the Year honor in 1981 and was named SEC Coach of the Year on four separate occasions.
His roster included future NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Rudy Macklin. Brown arrived in Baton Rouge in 1972 to build a competitive program. He traveled across the state to promote the sport and engage local fans. In 1979, LSU captured its first SEC regular-season championship since 1954.
Brown’s family described him as a humanitarian who prioritized others. "We have lost the most loving and most loved man any of us has ever known," the family said in a statement. They noted that he "always led with the heart." Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry stated on X that Brown put the program on the map. Sports journalist Marc J. Spears described Brown as an extraordinary human who shared wisdom about life and basketball.
In a 2025 interview with WAFB reporter Chris Nakamoto, Brown recalled a game against undefeated Kentucky. All five of his starters had fouled out. Brown told the remaining players, "From now on you are not substitutes, you are backups." LSU won that game. Brown credited his mother with teaching him to do what is right. He also recalled her warning that polishing one's image tarnishes character.
Brown was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame. The university unveiled Dale Brown Court inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in 2022. In 2023, the facility was renamed Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court to honor both former coaches. Brown was born in Minot, North Dakota, on Oct. 31, 1935. He died eight days before his 91st birthday.
