Florida State University has terminated head football coach Mike Norvell.

The decision followed a 36-24 home defeat by Clemson University on Saturday. The game marked the Seminoles' third consecutive loss in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Empty seats were visible in the stands during the fourth quarter of that contest.

Norvell enters his seventh season with a record of 17 losses in his last 21 conference games. His total buyout is estimated at just under $49 million. This figure represents roughly 85% of the salary remaining on his contract, which originally extended through the 2031 season.

The payout places this buyout as the third largest in college football history. It trails only the $77 million paid to Jimbo Fisher by Texas A&M University and the $54 million paid to Brian Kelly by Louisiana State University. Norvell's contract included a provision that allows the total cost to decrease if he secures another coaching position.

Norvell signed a lucrative extension following the 2023 season. The Seminoles finished that regular season undefeated and won the ACC title. However, quarterback injuries prevented a College Football Playoff berth. With Nick Saban retiring from Alabama that same year, Norvell negotiated a deal that placed him among the top 10 highest-paid coaches in the nation. The extension added two years through 2031 and increased his annual salary by more than $2 million.

The contract has become difficult for the program since the team went 7-17 across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. That losing streak made the 2026 campaign a critical year for Norvell's standing. He is scheduled to earn $10.3 million in salary for the current 2026 season. After this year, he has five years and $54.75 million remaining on his deal.

Following his firing on Sunday, Florida State owes Norvell just over $48.6 million. This amount covers 85% of the remaining five years of salary plus a $3 million base and an additional $750,000 from a recently renegotiated agreement. Penn State University paid James Franklin only $9 million when they fired him last year because he was set to become Virginia Tech's coach. Florida State cannot expect a similar drastic reduction in cost for Norvell.
