Tesla shareholders received mixed signals in the third quarter of 2026, with revenue holding steady but profitability taking a significant hit. The company reported $28.05 billion in sales, essentially matching the previous year and aligning with Wall Street forecasts. However, the bottom line suffered as operating income plunged by 56% year-over-year. This decline reflects a strategic shift where spending on artificial intelligence and new vehicle platforms is outpacing gross profit growth. For investors, the message is clear: Tesla is trading current margins for future capabilities.

The numbers show a company under pressure on the cost side. GAAP net income dropped 43% to $787 million, or $0.22 per share. Despite this, non-GAAP earnings of $0.48 per share beat the consensus estimate of $0.45. Total gross margin improved to 19.6%, up from 16.8% in the second quarter. The recovery in automotive gross margin, which reached 18.1% excluding credits, suggests better product mix and pricing discipline, even as average selling prices continue to trend downward.

The primary driver of the profit slide is a massive increase in operating expenses, which rose 39% to $4.78 billion. Research and development costs jumped 69% to $2.76 billion, fueling work on what Tesla labels as Super Intelligence, the Optimus robot, and the Cybercab. Stock-based compensation also spiked to $1.17 billion, up from $663 million a year earlier, largely due to the 2025 CEO pay package. Capital spending hit $4.73 billion, more than double the previous year's figure, though free cash flow remained positive at $1.53 billion.

Energy storage emerged as a weak point in the revenue lineup. Sales in this segment fell 16% to $2.88 billion, a result Tesla attributes partly to tariff-related customer refunds. Even though battery deployments increased by 10% to 13.7 GWh, the segment's gross profit slipped to $954 million. In contrast, the services and other division was a bright spot, with revenue growing 33% to $4.61 billion. Gross profit in this area hit a record $734 million, driven by strong performance in charging, insurance, and parts sales.

Management attributes flat vehicle sales to supply constraints rather than weak demand. Tesla stated that battery availability was the limiting factor for auto volumes and noted it ended the quarter with its largest passenger vehicle backlog in four years. Deliveries stood at 486,532 units, down slightly from the prior year but well above analyst estimates. The company delivered 22,141 more cars than it produced, reducing inventory to 11 days of supply. On the autonomy front, active FSD subscriptions reached 1.74 million, a 67% increase, while Robotaxi service accumulated nearly 2 million unsupervised miles.

The spending trajectory raises questions about the full-year capital budget. Tesla has spent $13.01 billion in the first nine months of 2026, roughly half of its guided target of more than $25 billion. To meet that goal, the company would need to spend approximately $12 billion in the fourth quarter alone, more than double its highest previous quarterly outlay. Since the shareholder letter did not update this guidance, the market will be watching closely to see if spending accelerates or if the plan slips into 2027.
