Tommy Robinson faces a maximum prison term of 10 years on each of two counts following a guilty verdict delivered at Southwark Crown Court. A jury of twelve found him guilty by a 10 to 2 majority after more than 11 hours of deliberation. The conviction relates to harassment causing fear of violence against MailOnline journalists Andrew Young and Jacob Dirnhuber. Robinson is scheduled for sentencing on December 16, 2026.

The charges stem from events in early August 2024. MailOnline published a report identifying Robinson and his family at a hotel in Cyprus following the Southport murders. The article included a photo of his ex-wife. Robinson responded with posts, direct messages, and a phone call to the newsroom. He argued the reporting endangered his children given the history of death threats he had received. The prosecution characterized his actions as intimidation.

The court accepted as agreed facts that Robinson had received four Osman warnings from police between 2018 and 2024. The most recent warning arrived immediately after the Cyprus story was published. An Osman warning, formally known as a Threat to Life notice, signals that intelligence indicates a real and immediate risk to an individual’s life. At that time, a video circulated showing a man making a rifle gesture while naming Robinson.

This legal challenge follows a series of other state actions against the activist. In July 2024, officers stopped Robinson at the Channel Tunnel under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act. They requested the PIN to his phone, which he refused, citing journalistic material. A judge ruled the stop unlawful in November 2025, noting it was based on his political beliefs rather than terrorist suspicion. Robinson described the stop as a fishing expedition.

Robinson faced another border stop in June 2026 upon returning from Russia. Officers under Schedule 3 of the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act seized his devices before releasing him. Prior to these border incidents, he served 18 months in prison in October 2024 for breaching a High Court injunction. That injunction prohibited him from repeating allegations about a Syrian schoolboy who had won a libel case against him. The material had been featured in interviews and the film Silenced.

His legal history includes a 2018 jailing for contempt of court. He was convicted for live streaming outside Leeds Crown Court during a grooming gang trial. Prosecutors argued the broadcast could prejudice the jury, although the information was available on the BBC website. Earlier convictions for contempt occurred in Canterbury in 2017.

Supporters of Robinson argue the legal actions form a consistent pattern of silencing a critic of government policies on immigration and policing. They note that each major public statement by Robinson regarding grooming gangs or integration has been followed by legal proceedings. The Osman warnings, they point out, confirm a real threat from extremists, yet the state has pursued legal action against his speech.

The December sentencing will determine whether Robinson receives immediate custody or another form of disposal. An appeal may follow the sentencing. The current verdict is the latest in a sequence of legal interventions including terror stops, contempt findings, and injunctions targeting the activist.

Robinson’s case highlights the application of counter-terrorism and civil powers against a prominent public figure. The jury’s decision to return a majority verdict indicates a division within the panel after an extended deliberation period. The specific counts of harassment center on the interaction between Robinson and the MailOnline staff in August 2024.
