Two goals end a perfect season start for Manchester City
Nicolas Jackson's double at Aston Villa snaps Manchester City's seven-game winning streak in the Premier League, leaving them vulnerable to being caught by rivals.

The number two is now the most significant figure in Manchester City's early season narrative. After a flawless run of seven victories that set a historical record, the champions suffered their first Premier League defeat of the year with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa. This result marks the end of a remarkable streak and introduces a new level of uncertainty into the title race.
Enzo Maresca had achieved a rare feat by winning his first seven matches in charge of a new club. However, the pattern of results at Villa Park proved difficult to break for City. This was their fourth consecutive season in which they have lost at this venue, a statistic that highlights a persistent challenge for the visitors regardless of their current form.
The match began with a quick blow to the visitors. Just six minutes into the game, a heavy touch from Marc Guehi allowed Nicolas Jackson to gain possession. Jackson cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot that sailed past Gianluigi Donnarumma, giving Unai Emery's team an early lead.
For the majority of the first half, City dominated possession but struggled to convert that control into goals. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki emerged as a key figure, making crucial saves to deny Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. The pressure mounted as Ndiaye eventually struck the post, keeping the score at 1-0 at the break.
City finally broke through in the second half. At 52 minutes, Erling Haaland powered in a header from a cross by Ndiaye. This goal brought his total to 13 in just 10 appearances this season. Shortly after, Josko Gvardiol had a chance to take the lead, but his fierce drive was turned onto the crossbar by Suzuki.
Villa restored their advantage exactly on the hour mark. Ibrahim Mbaye found space behind the City defense and crossed the ball into the box. Jackson finished low with a shot that should have been parried by Donnarumma, securing the winning goal for the home side despite further pressure from City in the closing minutes.
The result has significant implications for the league standings. Arsenal has the opportunity to level points with City at the top of the table if they defeat Everton later on Saturday. For Villa, this victory represents their sixth win in seven games across all competitions, moving them up to sixth place in the Premier League.
This performance underscores the ongoing project under Unai Emery, who has transformed Villa into a consistent Champions League competitor over the last four years. This resilience is notable given the significant squad turnover, with six players from last season's Europa League starting lineup departing during the transfer window.
The new summer signings, including Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi, are already making an impact after a slow start to the campaign. Their contributions have helped stabilize the team during a transitional period.
City will now look to bounce back while navigating an off-field challenge. The 10-time English champions are appealing a guilty verdict on over 100 charges related to financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018. Potential sanctions include heavy fines or even relegation, though the players showed little sign of distraction on the pitch. Two defensive errors, however, ultimately proved costly in this match.
