Ryleigh Schoonover will play her first college basketball game at the Save Mart Center in less than two weeks. The Fresno State season opener against UC Merced is approaching, and the local guard is set to debut in front of a hometown crowd.
Schoonover is joining the Fresno State women's basketball team as part of a freshman class. The move keeps her in the Central Valley, a decision she made after years of competing in a high-pressure environment at Clovis West. She noted that wearing the valley 'V' on her jersey carries a specific weight that outsiders often miss.
Her high school program is defined by a long period of dominance. The Clovis West Golden Eagles have captured consecutive Central Section titles for 14 years. This streak has created an environment where victory is the baseline expectation rather than the exception.
Coach Ryan McCarthy of Fresno State described Schoonover as the top talent in her 2026 class. He stated that her immediate impact on the roster proved his assessment. McCarthy explained that her background in a program that consistently wins has prepared her for the demands of the college game. He said the expectation is that she performs at a high level every time she steps on the floor.
Schoonover credits her former coach, Craig Campbell, for instilling that standard. She observed that the intensity and expectations at Clovis West align with those at Fresno State. Campbell agreed, noting that the transition from high school to college is manageable for her because she has already operated within a championship culture.
Campbell believes Schoonover is still developing. He told the media that the Fresno State coaching staff is excited because he views her current performance as only the beginning of her potential. He described her as a gifted player whose full capabilities have not yet been realized.
The next two weeks will see Schoonover prepare for her first collegiate contest. The game against UC Merced will mark the start of her season in the Pac-12, a league where Fresno State is aiming for a championship.
