Waymo will extend its self-driving ride-hailing service to Torrance this week, adding the city to its existing coverage in the Los Angeles area. The expansion is part of a wider rollout that will add nearly 250 square miles of service across five different metropolitan areas over the next seven days.
The updated service map now includes Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. Previously, the company’s Los Angeles coverage stretched from Santa Monica to Echo Park and south to Inglewood. The expansion does not yet include Los Angeles International Airport, and the company has not announced plans to offer rides to or from LAX.
Waymo began as Google’s self-driving car project in 2009. In 2016, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, spun it off as an independent autonomous driving technology firm. The company launched its first commercial ride-hailing service, Waymo One, in Phoenix in 2018. That initial fleet consisted of small minivans. Later, the company began offering rides to the general public with no human driver in the front seat.
Los Angeles became the next market for Waymo’s ride-hailing service in 2022. The company started offering rides to people on a waitlist in March 2024. It opened the service to all users in Los Angeles in November of that year. The company did not specify how many of the 250 new square miles are located in the Los Angeles area.
Waymo now operates in 15 metropolitan areas across the United States. The company reports that it provides more than 500,000 paid rides every week.
