Defending champion Elena Rybakina has secured her place in the Ningbo Open final by defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider in straight sets. The match ended with a score of 6-3 and 7-5, a result that positions the world number one to claim the title for a second consecutive year. This victory also serves as a crucial performance indicator for the broader professional tennis circuit as players prepare for the upcoming season finale.

The opponent in Sunday's final is unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez earned her berth by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. Fernandez achieved this result with the identical scoreline of 6-3 and 7-5 in the first semifinal of the day. Both matches displayed a similar competitive dynamic, requiring the eventual winners to manage momentum shifts during critical moments of play.

Rybakina's path to the final was not without complications. The 27-year-old Grand Slam champion arrived in Ningbo following a challenging period in the Asian swing. She sustained a heavy loss in Beijing and subsequently withdrew from the Wuhan event due to a foot injury. Despite these recent setbacks, she demonstrated flashes of elite form against Shnaider, although the performance included periods of inconsistency.

The opening set saw Rybakina take early control through aggressive baseline play. She utilized powerful winners from deep positions on the court to establish a lead. However, a temporary dip in form forced her to work harder than expected to secure the set. She ultimately sealed the victory on her 11th set point. Rybakina noted the difficulty of the contest, stating, "It was an important game, and it was a long one." She added that while she played the first balls well, she struggled to close out the game despite multiple opportunities.

The second set mirrored the patterns of the first. Rybakina continued to face challenges with her first-serve accuracy but managed to win key points. She broke serve to take a 4-3 lead before being broken to love in the 10th game. The champion responded with significant power to regain the lead in the following game. She then served with increased confidence to conclude the match and advance to the final.

A key tactical factor in the semifinal was Shnaider's left-handed style. Rybakina acknowledged that playing against left-handers is a unique challenge on the tour. "She played really well, and it's always difficult to play against left-handers," Rybakina said. She explained that switching patterns during rallies was an issue, but she was pleased to win in two sets. This dynamic is particularly relevant for Sunday, as Fernandez is also left-handed, presenting a similar technical test for the defending champion.

Looking ahead, Rybakina aims to refine her game in the final before traveling to Tokyo for the Pan Pacific Open next week. Following that event, she will begin the defense of her WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8. The Ningbo Open title is the immediate priority, offering a chance for back-to-back victories. When asked about the prospect, Rybakina remained measured, saying, "It's never easy." She concluded, "Of course I'll try to do my best. I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow."
