Residents in the southern province of Jaén faced a sudden disruption to their daily commutes after a regional express train collided with a stationary freight car on Tuesday morning. The impact occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. local time, forcing thousands of passengers to evacuate the cars through open doors and emergency exits. Emergency services reported that the crash left 45 people dead and more than 150 injured, with 12 of the victims listed in critical condition.

The collision happened near the village of Villanueva del Arzobispo, where the regional train struck the rear of a freight train that had stalled due to a technical failure. Officials stated that the freight train was occupying the track for maintenance reasons but had not been properly signaled. The regional express was carrying 182 passengers, including schoolchildren and workers heading to the capital. Several carriages were heavily damaged, and sparks were visible from the twisted metal for hours after the initial impact.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the event a national tragedy and ordered a full investigation into the cause of the derailment. In a brief address, Sánchez said that the government would provide financial support to the families of the deceased and coordinate with regional authorities to manage the recovery effort. He emphasized that safety protocols on the rail network would be reviewed in the coming days to determine if any steps were missed before the crash.

Local hospital directors reported that emergency rooms in Jaén and nearby cities were overwhelmed by the influx of injured passengers. Medical staff treated patients for fractures, head trauma, and smoke inhalation. The regional health service deployed additional teams from other provinces to assist with patient care. Families gathered at the scene and at local clinics, waiting for news on loved ones who were listed as missing or unaccounted for.

The national railway operator, Adif, confirmed that the track section is now closed while engineers inspect the damage and collect debris. They noted that the freight train had been stopped for a scheduled inspection but the signal system failed to alert the incoming regional train. Investigators from the Railway Accident Investigation Board are on site to gather data from the black boxes of both trains. The board will submit a preliminary report within ten days, with a final assessment expected later this year.

Union representatives for the railway workers have called for a meeting with company executives to discuss the maintenance logs of the freight car. They argued that regular checks should have identified the mechanical issue that caused the freight train to stop unexpectedly. The unions also requested that all staff involved in the incident be given paid leave for three days to allow them to process the event and return to work with full mental clarity.
