Aston Villa announced on Friday that it will pursue legal action against former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. The club stated it is taking this step in response to comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast.
During the broadcast, Carragher told Villa supporters to shut up and asserted that the club would never reach the status of Manchester United. He argued that a clear hierarchy exists in football, noting that top teams like Real Madrid and Manchester United acquire stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo. Carragher claimed that only a few clubs sit above United and Liverpool, while teams below them, such as Villa, lose managers and players to those giants.
Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris confirmed the club’s position in a statement. He said the team would initiate legal proceedings for what he described as unacceptable insults directed at the club and its fans. Sawiris added that the club would not allow anyone to halt its rise in English and European competitions.
The dispute intensified amid speculation that Manchester United manager Michael Carrick could be replaced. Carragher discussed the possibility of Villa manager Unai Emery moving to Old Trafford if the opportunity arose. Carragher later described Emery as one of the best managers in the Premier League, suggesting his comments were a reflection of high regard rather than criticism of Villa’s performance.
Carragher responded to the legal threat on social media, calling the remarks a joke. He said the comments were a reaction to the criticism he received for suggesting Emery might want to join Manchester United. He posted video clips he believed showed him praising Emery and Villa, including his reaction to their 2026 Europa League victory in Istanbul.
The club did not specify the legal basis for its action. It also did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. Carragher did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the specific threat of a lawsuit, though he had previously sought to defuse the controversy by explaining the context of his podcast appearance.
