The Atlanta Dream lost the Women's National Basketball Association championship game to the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, falling 72-62 in a contest defined by a sudden defensive breakdown. The Dream entered the final period trailing by 10 points but surrendered 20 points in the fourth quarter while scoring only 12, a margin that sealed the loss for the visiting squad.
Las Vegas controlled the tempo throughout the evening, shooting 63% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc. The Aces also dominated the boards, outrebounding Atlanta 46-26. Their efficiency contrasted sharply with the Dream's struggle to convert half-court opportunities under pressure.
Dream forward Angel Reese acknowledged the pain of the result in the immediate aftermath. "It's tough, especially with the good group, great group that I've honestly had an honor to battle with all year," Reese said. She added that the team's dynamic had changed her life personally, expressing gratitude for her teammates despite the disappointment.
Reese emphasized the collective nature of the roster's resilience. "They changed my life, and I'm just so grateful for them, and I'm so thankful for them," she stated. The player framed the loss as a temporary setback rather than a final conclusion, invoking a common mantra among the group.
"And it is tough in the moment, but we'll be back. And I always say, 'Delayed, not denied,'" Reese noted. She pointed to the team's ability to stay connected through the season, citing their shared experience in the locker room as a stabilizing factor during high-pressure moments.
The Dream will return to the season opener in May, with Reese indicating that the group will focus on the next game rather than dwelling on the final score. "Every year, we take that in stride, reflect on it," she said. The forward described the team's approach as one of continuous improvement, noting that they will go out and play a single game at a time to reset their focus.
Reese concluded by affirming the team's commitment to their shared goal. "We'll be back, and also, I'm so, I love it," she said. The player expressed confidence in the roster's talent and the chemistry built over the year, suggesting that the foundation remains intact despite the loss.
