Mbappe seeks Ballon d'Or with record-breaking stats but zero trophies
The Real Madrid star holds the all-time World Cup scoring record but faces a historical hurdle as the award goes to a player with major silverware.

Kylian Mbappe is fighting to win the Ballon d'Or based on individual records rather than team success. The Real Madrid forward finished the 2025-26 season without a major trophy at either the club or national level. He will learn on Monday in London if his statistical dominance is enough to overcome that deficit.
Mbappe’s case rests on two key achievements. He won the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup in North America for the second consecutive tournament. He also became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history. His total stands at 22 goals in 22 matches. Lionel Messi follows with 21 goals, and Miroslav Klose is third with 16.
The French forward also topped the scoring charts in European club competition. He scored 25 goals to lead La Liga and 15 goals to lead the Champions League. Mbappe told RFI radio that the award recognizes a player, not a team. He said, "They won't announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player."
Despite his statistical lead, Mbappe is not the favorite among bookmakers. Real Madrid’s season was turbulent under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. The club finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marked the second straight season the team went without a major trophy.
France’s performance at the World Cup added to the criticism. The team placed fourth, losing to Spain in the semifinals. They also lost to England in the third-place playoff. Mbappe remains confident in his bid, noting that he was the top scorer in all the major competitions he entered.
His main rivals have stronger trophy counts. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane of Bayern Munich collected three trophies last term, including the Bundesliga championship. These achievements align with the historical trend of recent Ballon d'Or winners.
In the past decade, every winner of the award lifted at least one major trophy during the qualifying year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping Paris Saint-Germain secure their first Champions League title. Rodri won the 2024 award after leading Spain to Euro 2024 glory and Manchester City to the Premier League.
Mbappe’s situation has a precedent, though it is rare. Cristiano Ronaldo won the 2013 Ballon d'Or without a major trophy that year. He scored 66 goals for club and country while Portugal failed to qualify for the 2012 World Cup. Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Ronaldo’s victory ended Lionel Messi’s four-year winning streak.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has publicly backed his star striker. Mourinho said, "We know who has made history this summer, and he's not from PSG or the Spanish national team." Mbappe has been nominated for the award nine times. He placed third in the 2023 voting and sees this year as his best opportunity yet to claim the individual honor.
